New Dawn, New Day, Why Wait for a New Year?

With the holiday season in full bloom, and the year drawing to a close, it is a great time to shift gears  and take inventory on another year that has quickly come and gone. Whether we give thanks for family, good friends or our successes, the end of the calendar year gives us all a sense of reflection for the year past and a renewal for the year ahead.

I am so thankful for the many blessings that have come my way in 2007. With the birth of my beautiful daughter Caelyn over a year and a half ago, the wonderful world of parenthood has continued to enrich my life more than I could have ever imagined.

I realize how fortunate I am to be able to spend so much time with my family. This is what drives me in everything I do. Always remember what is truly important to you and create your life around them.

I have also had the great fortune to either meet or be in contact with amazing people like you. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of your lives to hear your stories and share in your experiences.

One of my favorite things for Sarah and I to do is recap the year with a top 11 list of our favorite moments. (Why 11? – see The Power of 11 post here ) The list usually goes far beyond 11 once we get going.

Then we create a new list of what we want to happen in the following year. It’s amazing what happens when you write things down. Not only does it provide you with a reminder of where your focus should be on a daily basis but it also attracts the right kind of energy that you need to take action and make it happen. At the end of the year it provides a great reference point for your review.

I encourage you to do the same with your spouse, a relative or friend or even someone you don’t know that well – you’ll be amazed what comes up.

But don’t wait until that mystical January 1st day. Start Now.

Ask yourself, “How many times have I set New Year’s resolutions?”

Now ask yourself, “How many times have I actually followed through with those New Year’s intentions?”

Be honest. If you’re like most people, the fire tends to die out and your New Year’s resolution is all but gone before the month even comes to a close.

So the question becomes, why do we put so much emphasis on setting New Year’s resolutions, if 90% of the time we don’t stick to them?

We all know we are creatures of habit, no matter what day of the year it is. So why not use that to our advantage? Why wait until January 1st? Is there a governing law that states, the way to all the things you want must wait until that ‘magical’ first day in the new calendar year?

Not that I’m aware of.

So what’s the first step? …

I’ll post the follow up in a couple of days – my allotted time is up!
